Top 12 Skincare Products of 2020

December 28, 2020

This year has been rough, to say the least. We all spent a lot of time indoors and if you were like me, you also spent a lot of time on self-care. I tried to distract myself and calm my nerves by building the perfect skincare routines, testing out skincare products, and multi-masking.

After testing different skincare products from toners to moisturizers as well as trying new brands to cult classics, the twelve products below are my favorite this year!

12. REN - Perfect Canvas Clean Jelly Oil Cleanser

I learned the importance of double cleansing last year. I have been sticking to doing it daily on the days I wear makeup. This cleanser is particularly interesting because of how the formula changes. First, warm the jelly cleanser in your fingertips until it turns to an oily substance. Then, gently rub it into your face and watch the makeup glide off. When water hits the product, it turns creamy and rubs off. The best part is that Ren is a clean brand that does not use harmful chemicals.

11. Sulwhasoo - Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Water

It’s true, K-Beauty (Korean beauty) has created some of the most interesting and effective products! This ginseng renewing water moisturizes and firms the appearance of skin. Plus, the smell of this product smells amazing. After cleansing skin, drop the product into your palms and gently apply in the direction of the skin texture.

10. Dermadoctor 0.5Oz Kakadu C Eye Souffle

The under-eye area is a super-sensitive spot and one of the most important areas to take care of. I fell in love with the light souffle-like texture of the Dermadoctor Kakadu eye cream. This product hydrates, smoothes, and firms delicate skin. This cream is made out of Kakadu plums which contain vitamin C that helps with brightening.

Shop Dermadoctor Eye Souffle

9. Paula's Choice -10% Niacinamide Booster

If you have oily skin, this is a product you have to try! Niacinamide protects the outer surface of the skin and balances the amount of oil production. Niacinamide also helps minimize the appearance of pores. This ingredient is a miracle worker!

8. Trilogy - Vitamin C Booster Treatment

Vitamin C is one of my all-time favorite skin ingredients in all of skincare! This vitamin c booster from Trilogy is nice, lightweight, and effective. It comes with a boost of hyaluronic that you add into the vitamin c. Apply this in the mornings and apply sunscreen afterward to protect your skin from sun damage and to lighten dark age spots.

Shop Trilogy Vitamin C

7. Paula's Choice - Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50

If you have oily skin or aren’t a fan of how heavy sunscreen feels, this is the SPF for you. The ultra-light formula of Paula’s choice feels like you have nothing on your skin. It is perfect for layering skincare ingredients before and applying makeup on top. Even with a full day of running around, you won’t feel sticky or oily at the end of the day with this SPF.

Shop Paula's Choice SPF

6. The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

I heard people rave about this product and I finally got my hands on it in March. When I first applied the product on, I felt a stinging sensation and immediately got scared. My first time, I only left the product on for 3 minutes. Even after such a short period, my skin felt skin firm and my pores felt clean. This is a great exfoliant that gets deeper than the surface level. I only use it once a week or once every two weeks because of its high potency/ strength. If you have super sensitive skin, this may not be the best product for you.

Shop The Ordinary Peel

5. Patchology- Breakout Box 3-in-1 Acne Treatment Kit

If you get pimples or whiteheads and want it gone overnight, this is the one product you should buy immediately! I was quite hesitant to believe the claims of making a pimple disappear overnight until I saw hard proof with my own eyes. When you get a pimple or whitehead, pop on a sticker and go to sleep. The next morning, when you peel the sticker off, you will see the gunk the sticker soaked up. It's quite fascinating to watch as well. The best part is that it will not leave any acne scars!

4. Paula's Choice - 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

I discovered this product towards the end of 2018 but began using it religiously in 2020 and saw miraculous results. If you have acne-prone skin or oily skin, this product is a great exfoliant that gets deep into your skin to clean out pores. It also helps fine lines and wrinkles less visible, truly helps improve the overall skin tone and texture too. I went through a whole bottle of this product quite quickly because it works and loved seeing the results!

Shop Paula's Choice BHA

3. L'Oreal- Revitalift Derm Intensives Night Serum with 0.3% Pure Retinol

The L'Oreal- Revitalift Derm Intensives Night Serum with 0.3% Pure Retinol was a product that surprised me this year! I was quite doubtful about how effective it would be because it's a drugstore product. Because it's 0.3% Pure Retinol, this formula is quite strong. It felt comparable to prescription retinol. Overnight, my skin felt firmer, plump, and rejuvenated. For its price, I highly recommend trying this!

Shop Loreal Retinol

2. Trilogy - Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+

The holy grail of face oils! Talk about hydrating the skin, reducing dark spots, and correcting pigmentation- this product works and does what the box says. I love incorporating this into my facial massages.

Shop Trilogy Rosehip Oil

1. First Aid Beauty- Ultra Repair Cream

And last but not least, my favorite new product I tried this year- the First Aid Beauty- Ultra Repair Cream. When I initially tried this product, I felt that it was too heavy. But after trying it again, I saw just how nourishing and hydrating this product truly is. It is also really great for multi-use from on your face to your body.

Vitamin C skincare Products

Vitamin C Skincare 101

July 3, 2020

So one of my favorite products to use on my skin is vitamin C! It has so many amazing benefits like reducing acne scars and giving a natural glow. However, I made a few mistakes that actually dried my skin out when I first started using it. I had so many questions about it like “when do I use it"?” and “in what order do I apply the vitamin C?'“, or “what kind of vitamin C product should I use?”! Today, I am going to answer all the questions I had and list some important things you should know before diving into adding vitamin C in your routine. If vitamin C is already a part of your skincare routine, I have a few tips for you as well!

Orange Vitamin C Products

What Vitamin C does for your skin and why use it

  1. It is an antioxidant meaning they help prevent the cell damage caused by harmful molecules

  2. Helps slow down aging

  3. It is a skin brightening agent that works to fade brown spots and can prevent future dark spots on skin

  4. Has enzyme that stimulates melanin productions

  5. Vitamin C limits the damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure

  6. It is a healing agent for your skin

  7. Accelerates production of collagen and elastin

When to use Vitamin C and how frequently you should use it

  1. It can be used in the morning AM or at night PM- if using it in the morning you must use with sunscreen

  2. Recommended to use with vitamin E for extra punch but not if you have oily skin because vitamin e is an oil-soluble vitamin and can clog pores

  3. Start using it twice a week if you are new to adding it to your skincare routine

  4. Then progress to using it 5 days a week

  5. I personally prefer to wear it in the morning to help with sun protection

Vitamin C Skincare Products

Where to apply Vitamin C

  1. Full face, neck, and chest - apply sunscreen over any area on top

  2. In between what products

  3. You should use it in the following order if your Vitamin C is a serum

    • Cleanser → toner →  vitamin c serum→ make sure skin is slightly damp → hyaluronic acid → eye cream→ spf moisturizer

  4. You should use it in the following order if your Vitamin C is a cream

    • Cleanser → toner →  serum→ hyaluronic acid → eye cream→ Vitamin C moisturizer → spf moisturizer

What skin types should use Vitamin C

  1. It is okay for all skin types but be aware of what percentage it is at.

  2. If your skin is more sensitive- only go up to 5% concentration

  3. If you are allergic to high acidic foods, try a little bit at a lower percentage first

  4. If you have oily skin- use a water based vitamin C. Look for the following on the ingredient list:

    1. L-ascorbic acid (water-soluble),

    2. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate or Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (water-soluble),

    3. Ascorbyl palmitate (fat-soluble),

    4. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (fat-soluble), etc

When NOT to use Vitamin C

  1. Do not mix with benzoyl peroxide because it can oxidize vitamin C

  2. Avoid using with other acids to prevent irritation

  3. Do not use it with retinol. Retinol can make vitamin C unstable and less likely to penetrate the skin

  4. Okay to use it with Niacinamide but not always recommended

Vitamin C Skincare 101 by krity_s on Jumprope.

Product examples of Vitamin C

  1. I prefer it in serum form

  2. Look for vitamin C  in dark bottles or that are covered. Getting sun exposure to the product makes it less effective.

  3. If the product has turned brown- return and do not use it! Keep in a cool dark place

  4. Replace every 6 months

  5. Do not have the tip of the beaker touch your face...ever!

  6. Favorites are no bs serum

  7. Paulas choice booster

  8. Paulas choice liquid serum

  9. Triology cream

Current Skincare Routine: Morning and Night

May 27, 2020

One thing we cannot defy is the movement of time. We all age which causes the skin to lose collagen, gain facial/ wrinkle lines, sun and/ or acne marks, and dullness in color. However, to slow down the process of aging, we can apply certain skincare products to help maintain our youth. Today, I am sharing my current morning and night skincare routine. I am showing you the exact steps in which I apply the products as well.

MORNING ROUTINE

During the morning/ day, one step I never skip is wearing sunscreen. It is a crucial part of preventing skin damage since sun exposure is one of the biggest culprits for skin decline. Another great sun fighting agent is vitamin c! It is an antioxidant meaning they help prevent the cell damage caused by harmful molecules. Vitamin C limits the damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. I apply this first before hyaluronic acid to help penetrate the product deeper. The hyaluronic acid helps lock in moisture in the skin but an important factor to remember is to make sure that the skin is slightly damp beforehand and by adding additional moisture through a cream afterward. I use vitamin c two to three times a week.

Follow the steps below after cleansing.

Morning Skincare Routine by krity_s on Jumprope.

NIGHT ROUTINE

At night, I like to focus my attention on repair and renewal. Retinol is one of my all-time favorite products for anti-aging. Retinol is a great ingredient to start using in your mid-twenties. However, it is known to cause irritation and dryness so start by using this product once or twice a week before building up usage. Niacinamide is an ingredient that compliments retinol and helps balance out the harsh side effects retinol can cause. Niacinamide reduces inflammation which may help ease redness from eczema, acne, and other inflammatory skin conditions. It is also great for oily skin types as it minimizes pore appearance and regulates oil.

Follow the skincare routine below after double cleansing and removing makeup.

Products to Prep Your Skin For Summer

May 9, 2019

As the seasons change, so does my skin. Winters cause my skin to get dry, blotchy, and dull but during Spring/ Summer, my skin gets oily and gives me slight acne. Anyone else have the same issues? Because of this, I need to change my skincare routine. While hydrating my skin is still so important, I need to do so without getting oily and getting oil bumps/ acne which I am more prone to during the spring and summer.

So how to I change up my skincare routine? I switch to products that are lighter weight, have spf for sun protection, and use the products that serve more than one purpose so I don’t have to wear so many layers.

L’OCCITANE SPF SKINCARE

L'Occitane SPF cream

Immortelle Precious Light Cream SPF 20

I have been using L'occitane products for a few years now. I trust their quality so I continue to use new products they add to their growing line. As we all know, sun UV rays are harmful to skin so protecting ourselves is key! When I heard that L'occitane released their highly rated Immortelle cream with SPF 20, I was so excited. After using it for a few weeks, I can say that the consistency of the cream is luscious, moisturizing, and smells like bliss. I use the lotion after my serums in the morning before foundation. I recommend letting the cream soak in for a few minutes before applying your foundation. I usually do my hair or get dressed while I let the lotion seep in. There is a lot of product in this jar of lotion and I can see it lasting from 6-9 months.

PAULA’S CHOICE

I had heard about the brand Paula’s Choice for years and I recently had the opportunity to finally try out their products. The raving reviews from consumers lived up to the hype! Here are the products I highly recommend trying and why:

Paula's Choice Skincare picks
Paula's Choice Face Wash

Hydrating Gel-to-Cream Cleanser Face Wash

If you have sensitive skin, this is a great face wash for you. I really like this one because the formula is light and it doesn’t feel like all oils have been stripped from my face after use. I hate having dry skin after washing my face. The bottle is huge (6.7 oz for $18) and a dime size dollop will go a long way. You will get your moneys worth with this product.

Eye Cream

Another Paula’s Choice product I’m loving is the Clinical Ceramide Enriched Firming Eye Cream! It has a blend of five replenishing ceramides, four forms of brightening vitamin C, two peptides and clinically proven retinol. I recommend using this under the eyes at night. I have been using it for the past month and feel that it has given me more of an “awake” look in the mornings with firmer under eyes. I sometimes even add a dollop of the C25 Super Booster with 25% Vitamin C to brighten my dark circles.

Paula's Choice Eye Cream

DERMA DOCTOR

Dermablend Serum Skincare_1.jpg

Kakadu C Serum

with 20% Vitamin C Serum with Ferulic Acid & Vitamin E

I think a key ingredient for a beautiful skin is vitamin C! It’s amazing what a difference it for your skin. I apply this serum both morning and at night but alternate days. When I use this serum during the night, I wake up with a natural glow- more even skin tone. The vitamin E and C helps brighten skin and enrich it with nutrients. It really does work miracles! I drip a few drops of the serum into my hands and rub them together first. Then I pat it into my skin gently and repeat this step until I feel like the product is evenly distributed. A little bit goes a long way with this product. Plus this product is made without sulfates, dyes, or any artificial fragrance.

Dermadoctor Serum

NATURA BRASIL

IMG_1272.png
Natura Brasil

Daily Revitalizing Oil

This Natura Brasil oil is a lightweight  blend of natural oils and esters which include grapeseed, almond, and lavender oils. The Brazilian Sapucainha in the oil provides powerful antioxidant protection too!

You may think that oils aren’t good for summer but I would say otherwise. I think using an oil like this from Natura Brasil is a great way to keep up with the summer glow. I recommend applying this oil in your dryer areas in your face. Mine is my jawline and chin. Sometimes, these areas stay dryer than the rest of my face so I like to maintain my glow and apply it to those areas. Another place I recommend putting an oil is your neck and collarbone. It just gives an extra sheen to make this area look extra beautiful. If you really want a beautiful summer glow, mix a drop of this oil with your foundation. It will leave your skin with a dewy look and the sun will reflect off beautifully!

You can shop this oil HERE.

ARTISTRY FACE MASKS

Multi-masking is the new way of masking! Our skin is not the same all in all part of our face. We all have different concerns that need to be treated properly. That is why I have been loving multi-masking.

In my forehead area that is the oiliest, I use Polishing Mask (purple) which helps smoothen the skin. The face mask has exfoliating beads that are perfect to remove excess dead skin cells.

In my nose area, I use the Purifying Mask (yellow), which is a clay mask that removes excess oil, dirt, and black heads.

Under my eyes and cheeks, I use the Brightening Mask (white), that helps dull skin looks brighter and energized.

Around my jawline and cheeks, where I am most dry, I like to use the Hydrating Mask (green) mask. This mask helps hydrate and smooth the skin.

I apply these masks on with my hand and remove it with a wet washcloth. I love how these masks are interchangeable for each person!
