Every morning, I look at my hair and ask myself “what should I do with this mess today?”. I attempt to do something cute, but I always go back to my normal styling which is either a basic ponytail or straight down. Unlike my outfits, I am pretty basic when it comes to my hair. But that isn’t because I don’t like fun hairstyles, I just don’t know how (or have the patience) to style it. Well the hair accessory trend has solved this problem! If you’re anything like me, you’re thinking '“hallelujah for hair clips”! Hair accessories have helped me elevate all of my hairstyles and transformed my whole look! The best part is that it doesn’t take any extra time when I get ready in the mornings! If anything, it helps control my frizzy ends (which take the most time to tame)!
First, start the new season with a fresh trim. I think it is really important to maintain a healthy hair and the best way to do this is by getting a regular haircut. I went to one of my favorite hair salons in New York City- VU Salon. The beautiful salon is located inside The Peninsula Hotel off of Fifth Avenue in New York City on the twenty first floor. The minute you walk into the salon, you feel completely relaxed as the staff welcomes you with a warm smile. The view from the salon is incredible too! As you are getting your hair done, you can gaze out into a beautiful skyline.
I got a glaze done for the first time by colorist Amy. I didn’t know what to expect, but my hair has never looked so shiny and rich! A glaze is a semi permanent color that coats the hair with shine. It’s like adding a top coat to your nail polish. If you don’t want to color your hair, this is the perfect treatment to try to liven up your hair! Ask for Amy if you visit VU Salon.
Next, KC gave me a fresh spring cut removing two inches of dead ends and adding some layers that frame my face perfectly. He was really great about asking me what I envisioned for my haircut but also talking about how I normally style my hair so it could fit my everyday lifestyle.
I left VU Salon feeling like a brand new woman. I highly recommend stopping by this salon if you are in NYC!
These are a few hair accessories I think you should try this Spring/ Summer season:
PEARL HAIR CLIPS PICS
Hair clips have been trending since NYFW runways had them all over the runways in February. I’m not talking about your basic hair clip though, I’m talking about beautiful jeweled clips. Think pearls, crystals, stones, words! Also, the bigger the better! It is all about making a statement with your hair clips. Plus, styling the clips in your hair is super easy!! Part your hair to one side or in the middle and clip both or one side- pushing the hair out of the face. This look is extremely sleek and looks good on any face shape. The best part is, on a windy day, it keeps your hair out of your face.
Pearl hair clips are all the rage right now! They are classy, lady-like, and go with any outfit. All you need is one clip to completely change your look. I love the texture they add to your hair. I also like wearing two at once in different shapes to make it even more interesting. You can style the clips with your hair down or up in a ponytail. Pearl clips are very affordable too! You don’t need to brake the bank to stay on trend this season. Shop some of my favorite pearl clips below.
CRYSTAL HAIR PINS
If you’re a glamour girl like me, you will love this hair trend! Bling no longer is just for jewelry, it’s all about adding it to your hair this year! Add a few pins to take your hairstyle to the next level. The crystal hair pins are great for daytime as well as a night out. There are so many options to choose from as well from words to shapes. I have linked a few of my favorites below!
VU Salon made me feel like a princess by giving me the perfect hairdo for a night out. KC took the old Hollywood curls and turned them to modern day perfection by adding this hair pins. He first started my giving me a blowout and then using Hot Tools 1 inch curling barrel to curl sections of the hair in the same direction. After that, KC slowly brushed out the curls and using a comb, placed the curls perfectly. He finished off by spraying hair spray to hold the look.
BOBBY PINS
I have always been taught to hide my bobby pins and to make sure they match my hair color. Well not anymore ladies! Wear your bobby pins loud and proud! Matter of fact, where the whole pack at once! Also, try out a contrasting color so the bobby pins really stick out. An easy way to style bobby pins are by parting your hair to one side. Insert the bobby pin in the front diagonally. After that, insert another pin so it intersects with the other pin creating an “x” shape. Repeat the steps until you are satisfied. It’s super easy and take an everyday hairstyle to the next level!
HEADBANDS
Think Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. A queen bee deserves a crown like a headband. I know the stereotype of headbands are associated with preppy style but, today, headbands are modern, edgy, and a chic way to pull a look together. Headbands that are made in satin fabrics with a knot top or embellishments are my current favorites. When your hair piece is so bold, a simple outfit is the perfect finishing touch.
Well the next question is “how do you style it”? I prefer to wear headbands with a simple middle part. Your hair can be worn down, or pulled back in a low ponytail- curly or straight. If you’re going for a laid back look, pull a couple of strands out in the front.
SCARVES
I’ve only ever worn scarves around my neck, but this season, I’m wearing them in my hair. I’m braiding them into my hair to add color and texture. There are multiple ways to wear a scarf in your hair depending on your level of expertise. Mine are quite low so if I can create these looks, you can too!
Option 1: easy
Pull your hair in a regular ponytail, high or low. Take a scarf and fold it in half, creating a triangle shape. Then fold it a few more times, until it is about 1 inch wide. After that, tie it around your hair and double knot it for security. You can also buy scarf hair ties now which makes this look even easier to achieve!
Option 2: difficult
Take your scarf and fold it in half, creating a triangle shape. Then fold it a few more times, until it is about 1 inch wide. After your have done that, take a bobby pin and pin the scarf under a few layers of hair to hide it. Then proceed to braid your hair normally acting as if your scarf is your hair. Secure the braid with an elastic band. To make the braid look fluffier, lightly pull your braid out.
SCRUNCHIES
Yes, let’s take it back to the good ol’ 90’s! Scrunchies were never one of my favorite hair accessories back in the 90’s but today, I love how they come in fun prints, fabrics, and long ties. I love the scrunchies in silky fabrics! Patterns like polka dots and animal prints are the way to make this trend look modern. You can wear your scrunchies in your hair or even around your wrist as a bracelet.
GLITTER IN THE PART
Wanna take a walk on the wild side? Well, this hair trend is totally for your if you want to try something extra! Add a lot of glitz and glamour to your normal hair part by adding glitter to it. It’s quite simple to achieve and doesn’t cost much money at all. First, part your hair in the desired area. Then take eye shadow glue and apply it inside your part. After that, sprinkle a layer of glitter on top. I love using the NYX glitter for because it’s very affordable and super shiny. This look is perfect for when you are looking for a glamourous look. The best way to get the glitter out is by washing your hair.
