How to Wear Complimentary Colors

I went to school for art and design and studied color. It’s funny how I remember things. As a creative person, I can’t remember dates and/ or names. However, I can remember the color of a logo or the design. I also remember days and life events by what was wearing.

One of the biggest color theories I studied in school was the power of complementary and contrasting colors. Complementary colors are opposite on the color wheel. For an example:

Orange and Blue

Green and Red

Purple and Yellow

Complementary colors work really well together when putting outfits together! They create a bold look, don’t need to mix patterns/ prints with, and they will get you a ton of compliments!

I found this amazing baby blue Cole Haan coat and immediately fell in love. Real life story- I was trying the coat on and the woman said it didn’t look good on me and that it was too big. She waited till I took the coat off to see I was purchasing it. I hugged the coat very tightly, then she finally walked away. My guess is, she was waiting to get it for herself.

I love this coat so much that I’m creating outfits to go with the coat! I immediately thought to wear yellow with it. I brought back my yellow spring dress but layered it with my yellow turtleneck to make it winter appropriate. One of my favorite fashion hacks is to layer shirts under a dress. It automatically makes in wearable in colder temperatures and looks really modern.

Throw some necklaces over your turtleneck as this jewelry trend is really in right now. Go ahead and put three or four necklaces on.

Try wearing complementary colors together this season to get all the compliments!
